Clan and Quattro LED slash energy consumption by 58 per cent at Capodichino Airport

Following a refurbishment project to improve the energy efficiency at Capodichino Airport, Italy, Thorn's Clan and Quattro LED luminaires have reduced the airport's annual light energy consumption by 58 per cent. Highlights of the refurbishment include:

  • A daily energy consumption reduction from 414,854W to 172,260W
  • An annual energy consumption reduction from 151,422kWh to 62,874kWh
  • A reduced number of fittings from 482 to 310 (36 per cent less)
  • An installed power (KW) reduction from 37.71 to 17.98 (52 per cent less)
  • A CO2 reduction from 101.30 to 42.06 (58 per cent less)

The refurbishment has also increased the lighting level in the outdoor public spaces by 15 per cent and the indoor lighting level from 150 to 390 lux with better uniformity.

The outdoor refurbishment, which covered areas including the main access road, car park and apron area, involved replacing 110 HST 150W street lanterns with 110 Clan LED 58W fittings. For maximum energy savings, Clan LED features our new bi-power system, which facilities night time dimming through an easy to use on/off switch.

The apron area, which is lit by Champion and Mundial floodlights mounted on a high mast, is now compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard. Some of the floodlights are hot restrike versions to cater for emergency situations.

The indoor refurbishment, which covered areas including the open communal spaces, gates and ticket areas, involved replacing 372 2x26W fluorescent downlights with 200 recessed Quattro LED 58W fittings.
