Electric Products (NZ) Limited was founded in 1936 and subsequently purchased by Thorn Lighting. The company's primary purpose was the manufacture and distribution of electric light bulbs, incandescent lights, neon lights and other related products. By the mid 1960's fluorescent light fittings were in production at the Thorn factory in the western suburbs of New Lynn. Since then the factory and head office have relocated to Rosebank Rd in Avondale and Thorn's focus has shifted from the manufacture of light bulbs to the design and manufacture of light fittings to suit a broad range of applications including: sports stadia, tunnels, roads, offices, warehouses and commercial buildings.

Today, light fittings continue to be designed, manufactured and assembled in the Auckland factory and distributed throughout New Zealand in conjunction with imported products.

In 2000 Thorn was purchased by Zumtobel Group, a global lighting company with its head office in Dornbirn, Austria.

The shift towards LED lighting has brought significant change to the lighting industry with new designs and technology emerging at a rapid pace from our global factories and R & D centres.

In keeping with our strategic planning for future growth, and as a fitting end to our 80th year in business, the Auckland operation will move to new, purpose-built premises in Avondale at the end of 2016.
